The Arts Foundation moves into beautiful new space in Hyannis

“We love this space,” says Julie Wake, executive director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. “Every time I walk in I think, I actually work here.”

The nonprofit organization, originally located on Patti Page Way next to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and for a short time in the vacant offices of Bank of Cape Cod, moved into newly renovated digs on Main Street in Hyannis at the beginning of April. The 1,200-square-foot space, owned by Puritan Cape Cod and located above Rendez-Vous Café and Pizza Barbone, features offices for Wake and her staff of three, a conference room and an area for summer interns and workshops. There’s also plenty of wall space for enormous pieces of artwork. Paintings by local artists Jackie Reeves, Richard Neal, Sarah Holl and Heather Pilchard are on display—and for sale.

The Arts Foundation, which supports and promotes the arts on the Cape, raises money to help fund grants, scholarships and fellowships. They also work at the legislative level—local, state and national—to ensure the arts receive necessary funding.

Wake says she felt a calling to move the Arts Foundation to the center of Hyannis because she wanted to be part of Main Street’s energy and revitalization. “We knew that Rick Penn (co-owner of Puritan Cape Cod) was a big supporter of ours,” says Wake, “so we asked him if he had anything available.” After a few meetings, plans were drawn up and walls were taken down. “It was a complete gut,” says Wake.

“We are fortunate to have the Arts Foundation,” says Penn. “They promote and cultivate the arts on Cape Cod. Certainly one of the signature events on Cape Cod is Pops by the Sea,” says Penn, “which happens right here on Main Street in Hyannis. Without the Arts Foundation, that event would not happen. When Julie approached me about office space, in my mind it was an organization that has brought so much to Main Street.”

“This is what I envisioned the Arts Foundation to look like,” says Wake. “A welcoming space, in the center of town, full of art, a space for workshops and room to grow.”

Pops by the Sea, the Arts Foundation’s signature event and biggest fundraiser, will be held Aug. 13 on the Hyannis Village Green. For more information, call 508-362-0066 or visit artsfoundation.org.
