Anchors Aweigh

Brothers Chris and Tony Pons, owners of the new Cleat & Anchor on Lower County Road in Dennisport, have made sure that anyone looking for the old Rum Runners, which enjoyed this location for 30 years, would recognize a few things: The vintage wooden bar top has been refurbished, original signs are displayed and tuna tails are still hanging on the walls. But the eatery has a fresh nautical look that plays off the old charm and suits its new name. The Pons brothers, who grew up locally and graduated from Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich, know that most folks seek out traditional seaside comfort food when they are on the Cape, so they haven’t strayed far from that concept. “Working with our phenomenal executive chef Eric Hammer, we offer a different twist on New England classics and Cape Cod fare,” says Chris. “We are all about quality, portions, value and everything executed at a very high level.” Tony and his fiancée, beverage manager Felicia Grossi, left the restaurant scene in Boston to lend their expertise to Cleat & Anchor. “I wanted to create an environment where there is a wealth of opportunity for staff, and where they can learn and grow,” says Tony. Grossi’s craft cocktails employ housemade purées and mixes and have themed names like Wind Surfer, Wash-Ashore and High Seas. And yes, you can even belly up to the bar and order a Rum Runner.
