Art in the Park

The National Park Service is celebrating its 100-year anniversary, and the Cape Cod National Seashore is offering seaside ceremonies and events to commemorate this important centennial. It has been 55 years since President John F. Kennedy signed the bill to authorize the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore on Aug. 7, 1961. This monumental movement by the National Park Service and President Kennedy allowed for the protection of undeveloped land as well as already established communities on Cape Cod. This year, the Cape Cod National Seashore partnered with the Addison Art Gallery in Orleans to organize this celebration, leading to an art-centered appreciation of the national seashore and other parks. The festivities included plein air painting in the park earlier this summer. More than 50 artists participated, using oil, acrylics, pastels and other media in order to capture the beauty of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Their finished products, as well as other studio work created in honor of the seashore, will be shown at Addison Art Gallery as a part of its “Found Our Park!” exhibit. In addition to the gallery displaying these works throughout the year, the Eastham Public Library will host an exhibit in November. There will be an opening reception from 3-5 p.m. Nov. 12 at the new Eastham Public Library, also celebrating the opening of the new building.—Bailey Soderberg
