EDITOR’S PICKS

Fun Way to Stay Fit

Cape Fit Hoops

Hula-Hooping with a view! During the 50 to 60-minute class, instructor Jessie Decker engages participants with aerobic exercises set to fun, upbeat music. The hoops are bigger, wider and slightly heavier than regular Hula-Hoops, which makes them easier to spin around your waist. Decker, who makes her own Hula-Hoops with special tubing and colorful tape, started teaching in 2015 through the Brewster Recreation Department at Drummer Boy Park and at Chatham Bars Inn as a corporate trainer. She has certifications for FXP Hula-Hoop Fitness, FXP Future Hoopers and FXP Hoopyasa, which incorporates yoga poses, Pilates and barre with hooping. Classes on the beach begin in late June and run through August at Breakwater Beach in Brewster and at the beach at Chatham Bars Inn. Decker also leads private group beach classes at many local clubs and resorts. In the off-season, you can catch her teaching classes at Cape Cod Beer on the third Wednesday of each month.

For updates and information about classes, visit capefithoops.com, email capefithoops@gmail.com or call 603-387-9852.

Best Healthy Addiction

Hokum Rock Blueberry Farm

Although the gates open at 8 a.m., you’ll want to arrive at least 15 minutes earlier, when cars start lining up outside the farm on Route 134. Try to cut in line and you might get honked at very loudly. People take their blueberry picking seriously! When the gates open, drive down the dirt road, park your car and grab a metal tray and empty pints. The workers will then guide you down rows of blueberry bushes available for picking. During July and part of August, there are plenty of plump, delicious blueberries. We bet you’ll become addicted to this healthy snack and want to visit more than once. Check the farm’s website daily because its hours are based on when blueberries are ripe and ready for picking.

Best Spot to Learn About Local Marine Life

Woods Hole Science Aquarium

Before entering the oldest public aquarium in the country, you will fall in love with its most popular residents: the harbor seals. If you schedule it right, you can also watch feedings a couple of times a day. Although small in size, the Woods Hole aquarium is big in education with information about local sea creatures. On display are about 140 species of marine animals found in the Northeast and Middle-Atlantic U.S. waters. Founded in 1875 by Fisheries Commissioner Spencer Baird, the aquarium features exhibit cases and information about marine animals and endangered species. On the upper level, kids will enjoy the touch tanks filled with horseshoe crabs, spider crabs, starfish, hermit crabs, lobsters and quahogs. Free admission, but donations are welcome.

Best Place to Unwind

Spohr Gardens

As you stroll the garden paths located at the end of Fells Road in the Quisset section of Falmouth, a sense of calm will rush over you. Located on Oyster Pond in Falmouth, the six-acre woodland garden is open year round to the public. Charlie and Margaret Spohr, who bought the property in 1950, regularly invited the public to walk the paths and see what they created. In 2003, the Friends of Spohr Gardens was formed to increase awareness and raise money to support the beautiful grounds. In the spring, there are thousands of daffodils, followed by magnolia trees, azaleas and rhododendrons. It’s so peaceful, romantic and magical, it’s no wonder why many newly married couples have their photos taken here. In addition to the beautiful gardens, you’ll enjoy seeing massive ships’ anchors, church bells and lighthouse lanterns, all collected by Charlie over his lifetime.

Best Boating Adventure

The Goose Hummock

Reserve a 14-foot aluminum Starcraft (which accommodates four people) for a half-day or a full day. Fill out a brief rental waiver, head down to the dock on Town Cove in Orleans and fasten your life jackets. The route will take you from Town Cove to Hopkins Island, past oyster beds before arriving on the quieter side of Nauset Beach. Be sure to bring coolers with sandwiches, snacks and drinks onto the boat so you can enjoy lunch on the beach! Don’t forget nets and buckets for the kids. There are plenty of opportunities to catch crabs and minnows. You might even see some seals bobbing up in the waves.

15 Route 6A, Orleans. To reserve a power boat, call 508-255-0455. Rates are $150 for a half day and $275 for a full day. Stand-up paddle boards and kayaks are also available to rent.

Best Relaxed Vibe

Coffee Obsession

When we visited the beloved Palmer Street location on a late Wednesday afternoon, we met a young man who visits Coffee Obsession daily to read a book while sipping a Mexican mocha latte or green tea. He described the coffee shop’s vibe as “hygge,” a Danish word meaning “coziness.” We couldn’t agree more. In another corner, three senior citizens say they meet twice daily here to discuss current events and politics. In the center of the shop, high school girls enjoy cherry Italian soda in between giggles. The mismatched chairs and chalk drawings created by one of the baristas, Sarah Peters, add to the warm and funky vibe. The friendly baristas, delicious coffee and fresh muffins, scones and bagels will convince you to visit again and again.

Best Place to Go For a Hike

Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail

The 1.2-mile trail filled with moss-covered trees and a swamp is magical and enchanting. The path, located opposite Marconi Station site, starts out with a pine needle-covered trail and about a half-mile into the walk, you descend onto an elevated boardwalk over the swamp. The day we explored and took photographs, we met a young family visiting from Franklin. “When we mentioned hiking to our kids,” said mom Nancy Hennessey, “they weren’t that excited. But when we got here, the kids loved it.” We fell in love with it, too, and can’t wait to go back. After your hike, be sure to walk across the parking lot and visit the site where Guglielmo Marconi made communications history by sending the first transatlantic wire message from South Wellfleet to Great Britain.

195 Marconi Station Road, South Wellfleet; follow signs to the Marconi site and Atlantic White Cedar Swamp

Best Place For Gift Ideas

Wish Gift Co.

When a coworker asked about gift ideas for our departing intern, I immediately thought of the Wish Gift Co. in Sandwich. Located in Merchant’s Square beside Café Chew, Wish Gift Co. owner Penny Sampson arranges merchandise in beautiful, slide-top pine boxes. After climbing up the stairs to this charming store, you’ll encounter displays of whimsical greeting cards, gourmet treats, journals and notepads, and natural soy candles. You may even find hidden treasures personally selected by Sampson, whose talents in marketing shine through her business. While some boxes are pre-arranged for weddings, baby showers and other occasions, Sampson encourages customers to select pieces themselves to create a one-of-a-kind gift.

Best Family Fishing Activity

Cap’n Kids Fishing Adventure

Bait a crab trap. Catch some fish. Pull a lobster trap. Swab the deck. The two-hour, fun-filled adventure on a 50-foot U.S. Coast Guard vessel led by Captain Carl is geared toward kids, but adults will have a blast, too! The helpful and friendly crew explains how to cast a line and reel in a fish, how to take it off the hook and how to rebait the lines. They will even help you capture that perfect snapshot with your fish. Kids will love the spider crabs released on the deck. Some fish might even be big enough to take home. June 24 through Sept. 4 daily. Reservations recommended.

Best Inspiring Art Studio

Frederick Studio Provincetown

“This dream of opening my own studio has bubbled up for so long and now it’s exploding,” said artist James Frederick, as he was preparing for the grand opening of his new, larger space. Frederick’s Studio in Whaler’s Wharf off Commercial Street, originally located on the second floor for two years, is now on the ground floor, steps away from Commercial Street. The gallery and working studio, designed by the artist himself, features a giant black-and-white mural of Provincetown hand-drawn by Frederick and offers a mix of comic books, his paintings and destination coloring books. The former interior designer from Dayton, Ohio, says he was drawing comics one day and a friend inspired him to research coloring books. Since then, Frederick has produced two: “Color Me P-Town” and “Color Me Cape Cod.” “There are parents who bring their children in here and say, ‘Sally likes to draw,’ and I see that she is a timid little girl,” says Frederick. “I can look these kids in the eyes and say, ‘Keep drawing. Don’t stop drawing. Keep painting. It gives me goosebumps. I wish I would have heard that as a kid.’” Frederick will host opening receptions of his work from 6-9 p.m. on July 7, July 28, Aug. 18, Sept. 1 and Oct. 6. The studio is open every day during the summer season.
