Puppy Power

Paw Palooza

Photo: Kim Roderiques

At Cape Cod’s biggest annual dog festival, man’s best friend flies, swims, dives and entertains the masses. The two-day event, hosted by the Agway of Cape Cod Charitable Foundation, features police K-9 demonstrations, a Frisbee Dog show, a puppy pool pavilion, food trucks, a “radar run” to test your dog’s speed and a doggie caricature artist. This year’s Paw Palooza was held on July 14 and 15.

23′ 5″

The distance of the longest jump into the pool at last year’s festival. That champ named Sinjin (pictured at left) lives in Brewster and will be returning to defend his title this year! (The World Record, by the way, is 31 feet and is held by two dogs, a Black Lab and a Whippet.

27,000

Gallons of water needed to fill up the pool from a nearby fire hydrant.

$53,000

The amount donated to the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Cape Cod shelter and the MSPCA shelter in Centerville as a result of Paw Palooza in its first two years.

1,200

Number of dogs that attended Paw Palooza over the course of the weekend this year!

26 miles per hour

The fastest speed clocked in the “Radar Run” last year.  Dogs and their owners enter the run as a pair. The owner throws a tennis ball and as the dog chases it, his/her speed is  recorded by an official Orleans Police Department radar gun.

Great Rustic Accommodations

Treehouse Lodge

Photo: Christian Giannelli

The Woods Hole Road building that once housed the Sleepy Hollow Motor Inn has been transformed into the fun, modern Treehouse Lodge. Think camping-themed accommodations without the actual camping: rustic-chic rooms with all the amenities (including the brand-new Canopy Deluxe rooms) surround a central outdoor space with a fire pit and lawn games that encourage quality time outdoors with other guests. It’s a short walk from Woods Hole’s bustling Water Street and the Steamship Authority. If you need a ride to the beach, they’ll take you in their “Beach Buggy” vans. —Lannan O’Brien

Perfect Summer Nights

Far Land on the Beach in Provincetown

DPM’s Surfside Grill in Dennis

Far Land on the Beach

Two quality markets, Far Land Provisions in Provincetown and Dennis Public Market, both offer fresh, delicious food on picnic tables at the beach. What could be better? In Provincetown, take in spectacular sunsets and listen to live music every Wednesday and Sunday in the pavilion area as part of the free sunset music series at Herring Cove Beach. Nightly specials created by Far Land might include sweet Italian sausage subs with peppers and onions or skate cakes over baby greens with warm remoulade. On the other side of the Cape in Dennis, DPM’s Surfside Grill  overlooking Corporation Beach serves fresh lobster rolls, homemade onion rings, steak tips, burgers and chicken teriyaki sandwiches with pineapple rings. Kids will have fun sitting in the giant Adirondack chair. Not to be missed for dessert: Key Lime Pie! Insider’s tip: Arrive early at both places to avoid lines.

Healthy Fuel

BŌL

Photo: Taylor Fry

Owner Alix Tillet has masterfully operated BŌL for the past four years. The menu features mouth-watering, eye-catching organic acai bowls and smoothies. Choose from popular menu items like the Jelly (strawberries, blueberries, peanut butter) or the Somerset (pitaya, bananas, mango). What drove Tillet to open BŌL is quite simple: “Food and color make me so happy,” she says. In her battle with Lyme disease, Tillet has found that fueling her body with good food is one way she has healed herself. At the core of BŌL, she says, is the idea that fueling your body with pure and beautiful food positively affects the way you move, think and feel throughout the day—and ultimately your life. This summer, check out their new location in Wellfleet! —Taylor Fry

The Inside Scoop

Caffe Gelato Bertini New Location!

Photo: Julia Cumes

Caffe Gelato Bertini was among the 2016 editor’s picks in Cape Cod Magazine, and they have since moved from Hyannis to Yarmouth. The popular Italian ice cream and espresso shop celebrates its 10th anniversary this season on South Street, where they share a building with Great Island Bakery. The new location allows more space for indoor and outside café tables, says Cindy Duby, who operates the shop with her husband, Tom. The Dubys make all the gelato (milk based) and sorbetto (water based) from scratch using local milk and fruits and imported Italian nuts and flavorings. The top seller is Cape Sea-Salted Caramel Cream, a fiore di latte gelato laced with house-made caramel. “In our early days, few knew what gelato was, and we did a lot of explaining,” says Cindy. “But people were immediately drawn by the intense flavor and, due to the lower fat content, viewed it as a healthier alternate to ice cream.” Open through October.

Cape Cod Baseball League Youth Clinics

Photo: Michael and Suz Karchmer

Batter up! Learn baseball basics from elite college players at the youth clinics, run by each of the 10 individual Cape Cod Baseball League teams. Summer instruction, typically held in the mornings, Monday through Friday, are available to boys and girls of all talent levels, ages 5-13. Families can sign up their children on a weekly basis by visiting the registration areas at each individual field on Monday mornings during the season. A lot of the kids come back year after year, and it becomes an important part of their summer says Steve West, president of the Chatham Athletic Association, which manages the Chatham Anglers and operates the clinics.

For more information, visit each individual team’s website or the Cape Cod Baseball League site.

Local Brews

Hog Island Beer Co.

Naukabout Brewery + Taproom

Marjorie Naylor Pitts

Last winter, Hog Island Beer Co. underwent major renovations. The brewery now features a bar that replicates a long board, and a real Winnebego cut in half hangs on the wall. There’s also a replica of Henry Beston’s Outermost House where you can pick up your food through the windows. The interior’s open space offers a fun, energetic vibe. Hang out on the expansive lawn, sit at a picnic table or play games like cornhole or ping-pong and test your mental skills with a giant Jenga game. Enjoy delicious bites, such as lobster fritters and beef tacos with spicy bacon jam and radish-pineapple sauce as well as beers on tap, including White Shark Wheat and Outermost IPA. Meanwhile, over in Mashpee, craft beer enthusiasts can “knock about” at the recently opened Naukabout Brewery, located at the former Flume restaurant site. The comfortably rustic taphouse features a rotating selection of eight “hop-forward” beers, such as Quittin’ Time New England IPA (juicy, tropical, Douglas fir pine: delicious!). While the brewery serves up the beer, local food trucks offer a varied selection of noshes. Cheers!

Trés Good

Crêpe Cod

Photo: Lannan O’Brien

Dine on sweet and savory crêpes and homemade soups, and sip beer, wine or cider at this authentic French and Moroccan eatery, which celebrated its grand opening last September. Housed in the former Cape Cod Cooperative Bank building on Main Street, the charming spot frequently hosts events, including Ladies’ Nights that feature a live musician or local artisan with gifts for sale. The only problem you might encounter is trying to decide which crêpe to order: the Olga crêpe with fresh berry sauce, the Victoria with Nutella and whipped cream, the Jersey with smoked gouda, turkey and tomatoes or Biquette with herbed goat cheese and honey.
Bon appétit!

Nature up Close

Butterfly House

Photo: Teresa Izzo

Feed an adult butterfly by holding a small sponge brush sprinkled with juice and watch the butterfly up close! Witness the fascinating transformation of butterflies and learn more about their importance to our ecosystem through the butterfly house, an exhibit at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster. The butterfly house is a greenhouse inhabited by monarch and painted lady butterflies. Visitors can observe butterflies in all stages of their lives—caterpillars and chrysalises as well as their full-fledged adult forms.

Through Sept. 2 at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, 869 Main St., Brewster. To make a feeding reservation, call 508-896-3867, ext. 133. General entry to the butterfly house is free with museum admission, but there is a $6 fee to feed the butterflies.

Summer House Natural Soaps

Team Lavender, Team Lemongrass and Team Oatmeal. Welcome to soap-making classes at Summer House Natural Soaps in Hyannis! “Each team makes a sizable batch of soap they pour into trays and everybody gets to take home all the flavors,” says owner Ann Miller, who has been making soap for 20 years. “We try to steer them toward scents that are easy to work with.” Three teachers oversee nine students who are divided into groups of three. Each team has its own scale and hot plate for melting fats. Some of the main ingredients include coconut, sunflower seed, palm oil, cocoa butter and lye. The class, which lasts about three hours, is part lecture, part hands-on and part chemistry. At the end, you’ll walk away with about three pounds of soap in three different scents, equivalent to about 15 bars. Sign up for their newsletter online to find out about upcoming classes. Don’t have time for a class? Stop by their free soap-making demonstrations from 10:30-11 a.m. every Friday through Columbus Day. Afterward, head next door to Cape Cod Beer at 11 a.m for a tour!
