The Canteen Offers Communal Dining Experience in P’town

The Provincetown restaurant offers shared seating at large tables and delicious food made from locally sourced ingredients year-round.

When Rob Anderson and Loic Rossignon opened The Canteen in Provincetown in 2013, their goal was twofold: offer affordable, fresh, homemade food and build a connection with the community. Anderson explains that he and Rossignon named their restaurant to evoke the communal experience of summer camp: “No matter who you are or where you come from, the canteen is where everyone starts and ends the day, where meals are shared and where friendships transform into lifelong bonds.”

Their community-minded vision is reflected in the locally sourced ingredients (more than 500 pounds of Cape lobsters are used daily in the high season), the support staff, “Team Canteen” and the design of the restaurant itself—which includes shared seating at large tables where Provincetown locals, tourists and celebrities regularly rub elbows.

Open year-round, The Canteen offers breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared and served by an eclectic and dedicated staff. Breakfast favorites include egg sandwiches, such as The Galley (with sausage, onions, cheddar and chipotle) or and Zeke’s Breakfast Reuben (corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing). Other morning delights: flannel hash (two eggs over corned beef), chicken and waffles (crispy chicken and spicy maple syrup), and housemade granola. Pair any of the above with a delicious mimosa or spicy Bloody Mary for even more reason to rise and shine.

Standout lunch and dinner options include traditional New England fare, such as clam chowder, fish and chips, and their huge (and hugely popular) lobster rolls (hot or cold, served on butter toasted brioche), as well as Provincetown oysters, served on the half shell or fried, with remoulade on a brioche roll. Don’t overlook innovative sandwiches, like the Cod or Shrimp Banh Mi (Vietnamese style, soy marinated baked cod or poached shrimp), creative salads, such as the Kale and Quinoa, daily soup specials and shareable sides. A must have: crispy Brussels sprouts—deep fried and tossed in a fish sauce with lime juice and hot pepper. Specialty cocktails, beer and wines by the glass or bottle are also available. Try the refreshing “Frosé,” a rosé wine slushy. You won’t be disappointed.

In the warmer months, The Canteen’s backyard is transformed into a magical secret garden. With a spectacular view of Long Point Light, guests can enjoy their meal al fresco on casual, bric-a-brac seating, including a large communal “Oh My Cod!” emblazoned table. “We set up an amazing beach bar, fire pits and games overlooking one of the most gorgeous ocean views imaginable,” says Anderson. “It’s a beautiful scene.” Oh my Cod, yes!
