Last year, Sharing Kindness was formed to honor a Nauset high school junior who died by suicide. Over four hundred Cape Codders joined us at the first Suicide Awareness Walk on Cape Cod last year. This year, we are partnering with Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Samaritans of Cape Cod and the Islands. This walk is open to anyone who has been impacted by the death of a loved one or associate to suicide. Please join us and help us to end the silence and raise awareness of this issue within our community.
The Barnstable County Human Services Department reports in 2017, forty people on Cape Cod died by suicide. Their ages ranged from 21-89 years old and covered most of the towns on Cape Cod. Death by suicide is the second cause of death is young people, ages 15-34. Every day nationally, twenty veterans die by suicide. The suicide rate on Cape Cod is double that of the state of Massachusetts.
Please consider helping by walking, volunteering at the walk, or donating as a sponsor for this event. We will have information on a social event on Friday night shortly; it will be a great way to participate and stay indoors in the changeable spring weather! Thank you for any assistance you might offer.
