Recreational anglers on Cape Cod often seek out a trio of prized fish—striped bass, bluefish and tuna. So it is fitting that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands have focused on those “big three” for their annual fundraiser. A key event for the organization many years ago, the Big 3 Fishing Tournament was revived in 2014 by E. J. Jaxtimer, a local businessman and supporter of BBBS, and BBBS Massachusetts Bay chairman Jeff Leerink. The tournament on July 14 includes a captain’s dinner followed by a day of fishing, with prizes for the largest fish in all three species. Three hundred people participate on 40 boats. By this summer, they will have raised more than $1 million in four years. “Big 3 funds go toward matching adult volunteers with over 300 youth across the Cape and Martha’s Vineyard,” says the organization’s regional director Richard “JR” Mell. “These transformational, one-on-one mentorships empower those youth to thrive.” There are many ways to get involved with the tournament, from offering captain services and buying sponsorships to giving in-kind donations.

The Big 3 Fishing Tournament will be held 5-10 p.m. on July 14 at Wychmere Beach Club, 23 Snow Inn Road, Harwich Port.
