Hooked on Mad Minnow

Michael Strangfeld and Tony Gullotti, along with their wives Megan and Meg, own and manage the Mad Minnow restaurant like it is a part of their family. Michael’s sister, Erin, hand-painted the Cape scenes hanging on the walls, his mom created the fish logo, and Tony and close friend Kevin Flynn crafted the bar table. Strangfeld describes the Mad Minnow as a creative Cape gastropub. The Mariner cocktail, above, is a prime example of the Mad Minnow’s innovative offerings. Made with Tito’s vodka, the drink is a twist on the Cape Codder, made with local ingredients: cranberry juice (the juice is also frozen into an ice sphere) and Wellfleet sea salt. Chef Mike Lynard has designed a creative menu around locally grown foods and native Cape flavors. The Mad Minnow is also generating interest with its funky brunches Saturday through Monday. Menu items vary from the “hangover burger”—fried egg, crab cake hashbrowns and spicy sauce—to the lobster Benedict with a pretzel muffin, avocado and hollandaise sauce. Local farmers and fishermen make daily deliveries, and the restaurant also uses freshly grown vegetables from their backyard garden. Don’t feel like leaving? Play a game of corn hole outside and hang out for a while. “This town is becoming something special,” says Strangfeld, “and we want to become a part of that elevation.”—Danika Thiele
