Cape Codders often view washashores—newer residents to the region—with a bit of skepticism. But this newcomer is more likely to elicit watering mouths than questioning glances. Washashore Bakery, which opened at Mashpee Commons in June, is the project of Sandy McPherson, a New Jersey native who spent her childhood summers on the Cape.
McPherson trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and worked at bakeries across the country before she decided to pursue her own venture on Cape Cod. The result is a quaint, airy shop that serves up classic baked goods made on site.
The regular roster includes cinnamon buns, chocolate cake and sandbars, a shortbread base layered with toffee and chocolate. Seasonal items lined up for the holidays include several varieties of pie (we have our eye on the cranberry apple), gingerbread and plenty of chocolate and mint.
Don’t see your favorite? Check in with McPherson: She’s always happy to take customer suggestions and try to create the confection you crave. —Sarah Shemkus
