“My hope is that this portrait series will create awareness and stimulate dialogue about breast cancer and its impact on women’s lives in our Cape Cod community, and lastly, inspire people visually and emotionally,” says Brewster-based photographer Julia Cumes. As a photographer, Cumes is particularly invested in capturing stories about the struggles women and girls face around the world. Her new photo exhibit, “Rise Above,” explores the many faces of breast cancer on Cape Cod through 16 large-scale photographs printed on aluminum. “The intent behind the choice of this print medium is to create the effect of the women being present in the gallery space, as if to participate in the show and give voice to their own experiences,” says Cumes, who collaborated with Sarah Swain and the Cape Wellness Collaborative on the project.
A reception for “Rise Above: A Photo Exhibit Exploring the Many Faces of Breast Cancer on Cape Cod,” will be held 6:30-9 p.m. on Aug. 7 at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main St., South Yarmouth. The event will include music, food, drinks and a variety of speakers. Tickets available at capewellness.org. All proceeds benefit Cape Wellness Collaborative.
