When it comes to eating, a friendly neighborhood place with home cooking is hard to find. But with the recent opening of Peter Scalata’s and Billy Achorn’s third Coffee Table Café, a cheery grab-and-go spot on Route 130 in Sandwich, the town’s Forestdale neighborhood has terrific coffee and more to boast about. Among the freshly prepared breakfast and lunch offerings, the Coffee Table, which also has locations in Hyannis and Popponesset, is famous for its oversized muffins in lots of flavors, but also hard to resist are chocolate croissants, fruit turnovers, cinnamon walnut biscotti, breakfast sandwiches and great big cookies, all baked daily and many using family recipes. Fresh gourmet salads and sandwiches fill the bill for lunch along with house-made sides like hummus and potato salad. And even though the Coffee Table closes before dinnertime, they thoughtfully prepare hearty, heat-and-serve dishes like lasagna and shepherd’s pie that busy people can pick up in advance. “We’re having a blast,” says Scalata, and judging by the steady stream of business, so are his customers.
