One 21 is the newest store to open in Mashpee Commons, located across from Bobby Byrne’s restaurant. The boutique, which sells fine Italian clothing, leather goods and jewelry, is owned by Sara Toselli and her husband, Andrea Poggi, who also own the Italian restaurant Osteria La Civetta in Falmouth.
When did you open One21?
We opened the physical store at the end of June, but we were selling online prior to that for two years.
What is the story behind the name?
One21 is my husband’s birthday, which in Roman numerals is IXXI. I’m a nerd and love the symmetry in IXXI, but I also wanted to use a simple name for the store.
What inspired you to open your own shop?
A couple of years ago, after working at the restaurant every day from May to October, I needed some retail therapy, so I decided to splurge on a bag. Even with a ridiculously high budget, I couldn’t find anything that I really loved. So, I contacted an Italian brand I had purchased from years prior, called UNDICI DIECI. I was surprised to find out no one carried this brand in the U.S.! The conversation went from “how can I buy a bag” to “how can we sell these bags in the U.S.”
What do you sell?
Only items that are made in Italy, specifically from the area we are from—Cento, which is between Ferrara and Bologna. We want our items to be unique yet causal. Italians are known for their sense of style and our goal is to carry smaller, independent brands.
What do you look for when choosing merchandise?
Material and design are the first things I look at when buying. I also want my items to be versatile, something you can wear to the office, but also out to dinner with friends.
