Warm Hospitality at The Pineapple Caper Café

Personal chef Tammy Russell taught herself how to cook over the years through trial and error—and by watching cooking shows. “I grew up in a huge family and [the conversations] always revolved around food,” says Russell, who owns Osterville’s newest eatery, The Pineapple Caper Café, with her husband, Bill, who is global vice president of Sensata Technologies in Attleboro. The pineapple is noted as a sign of hospitality, and the word caper, to Tammy, denotes someone who’s out and about doing things. The restaurant was well received by the town when it opened its doors on May 1. “We’re delighted to be here,” says Bill. “There was a gap in the community that needed to be filled.” The Russells started Pineapple Caper Mobile Café Food Truck in 2012 in Monson, Massachusetts, near Springfield, and one year later moved to the Cape. “Having the food truck taught us a lot,” says Tammy. Avocado toast is a hit for breakfast, and sandwich specialties include a pulled pork grilled cheese. Customers can also build their own smoothies with different types of fresh fruit. The atmosphere inside the Caper is warm, with orange walls and wood floors. Adding to the warmth is her staff, says Tammy. “We have the sweetest girls who work here and we get a lot of nice compliments.”
